Only in his thirties, Bill Charlap has already performed with jazz legends like Benny Carter, Jim Hall, Clark Terry, Gerry Mulligan, and Tony Bennett who called the young pianist "one of the greatest American musicians of our time." Born and raised in New York City, Charlap, the son of Broadway composer Moose Charlap ("Peter Pan") and singer Sandy Stewart (Benny Goodman) has become the standard bearer for the jazz piano trio tradition. He possesses an encyclopedic knowledge of American standard songs and a refined sense of touch, taste, and group interplay. His trio with bassist Peter Washington and drummer Kenny Washington have recorded two critically acclaimed CDs for Blue Note Records, the most recent of which, Stardust, spotlights the music of Hoagy Carmichael interpreted by the trio and some of the special guests featured during this engagement.

Known as the music director for John Lurie's group, The Lounge Lizards, and for leading his critically acclaimed band Sex Mob, Bernstein's MTO is steeped in the tradition of the Kansas City sounds of the '20's and '30's.

One of the premier players in jazz, pianist Cedar Walton combines rock-solid technique and an urbane lyrical quality with compositional skills that have produced widely played jazz standard tunes like "Firm Roots" and "Ugetsu." Walton began his recording career during the late 1950s with the likes of Kenny Dorham, J.J. Johnson, Art Farmer, Benny Golson, and others. He joined Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers in 1961, and played along side Freddie Hubbard and Wayne Shorter. In the 1970's he formed a trio with the late drummer Billy Higgins that set the standard of excellence for a working jazz group for over twenty years. Now Walton is a legendary figure in his prime leading a group of equally stellar cohorts.

Jean-Michel Pilc perfoms with two different ensembles to celebrate his new Dreyfus CD release "Cardinal Points." The French pianist arrived in New York City in 1995. He formed a trio with bassist Francois Moutin and drummer Ari Hoenig and immediately garnered critical attention. The New York Times writes, "Mr. Pilc seems to have dropped from the sky fully formed, with technique and ideas in place. He is a physical and densely harmonic player, a splashy stunner. . ." while the Washington Post calls Pilc "...a musical genius at work." Pilc has gone on to accompany Michael Brecker, John Abercrombie, and Harry Belafonte in addition to performing and recording with his trio.

Jazziz magazine calls Bud Shank's alto saxophone playing, "absolutely entrancing -- a fiery mixture of unmatched technical prowess and interpretive sensibilities that have matured to perfection... near the top of any list of living jazz greats." Shank, who first came to prominence in the big bands of Charlie Barnet and Stan Kenton during the late 1940s, was a charter member of the "West Coast" jazz movement. His cool but swinging sound has made him one of a handful of sax players with an instantly recognizable sound. Also, after decades as an L.A. studio stalwart Shank joined with Ray Brown, Jeff Hamilton, and Laurindo Almeida in the late 1980s to form the world-renowned "LA Four," who helped to popularize both Latin-flavored and chamber jazz styles of music. Shank's Jazz Standard debut represents a rare east coast appearance not to be missed!

In a career spanning sixty years, tenor saxophonist and flutist Frank Wess has been a featured soloist in just about every important outfit in the big band jazz tradition, Billy Eckstine, Count Basie, Woody Herman, and more recently Toshiko Akiyoshi. He also co-led a popular "Two Frank" big band and quintet with fellow Basie alumni tenor saxophonist Frank Foster that became the perfect showcase for his style, uncluttered swing combined with polished and highly sophisticated phrasing. His current quintet finds Wess assuming the role of living legend leading a talented group of sidemen by example.

Encouraged by music teacher parents, Wisconsin native Geoff Keezer began playing piano at age three. At the age of 18, he left Berklee College of Music after only one year to move to New York City and join Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. Keezer went on to perform and record with jazz legends Art Farmer, Benny Golson, Gerry Mulligan, and Ray Brown as well recording as a leader for a variety of jazz record labels. His new quartet CD release is on MAXJAZZ.

Jazz Standard is proud to present the U.S. premiere of the Charles Tolliver Big Band. Trumpeter Charles Tolliver who, after taking in the sounds of Lee Morgan, Dizzy Gillespie, and Clifford Brown at in the underage section of landmark New York jazz clubs as a teenager in the 1950's, decided to abandon his training as a pharmacist and become a jazz musician. Influenced mainly by the hard bop stylists Kenny Dorham and the aforementioned Morgan, Tolliver went on to record with Jackie McLean (for the legendary Blue Note label), Hank Mobley, Sonny Rollins, Roy Haynes, and Art Blakey. He formed Strata-East Records with pianist Stanley Cowell in 1971 and recorded two critically acclaimed big band records for the label. However, the group never performed in the U.S. until now. Don't miss this very rare and special engagement with an all star cast.

Japanese native pianist Hiromi may have still been a student at the
Berklee College of Music in Boston when her Telarc Records debut, "Another
Mind" was recorded, but she exhibits the skills of a veteran whose roots are
in jazz but whose varied musical tastes encompass everyone from J.S. Bach
and Franz Liszt to Sly and the Family Stone and King Crimson. "Hiromi
continues to change the musical landscape everywhere she performs," says her
mentor the legendary pianist Ahmad Jamal, who co-produced the CD.
